DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Before you begin, take the time to prepare your tools and workspace with absolute care. Every detail in this initial setup directly affects the precision of your engraving and the long-term reliability of your backup.

The following tools are recommended:

  • Automatic center punch with an impact force of ≈ 210 N

  • Solid, stable surface to protect the underlying area

  • Printed BIP39 wordlist as a physical reference

  • (Optional) Safety glasses and hearing protection

STEP 1 - ALIGNMENT

Before you make a single mark, place THE ZEED on your stable surface with the sharp corner facing top-left. This serves as your fixed reference point for the entire engraving process. Examine the corners carefully: you will notice that both sides are milled differently. Choose one side as the front and keep this orientation consistent throughout the process. Ensure the plate cannot move; even slight movement can cause misaligned dots or pattern distortion.

STEP 2 - PROCESSING

Each row on THE ZEED represents one word of your recovery phrase. Work through the process word by word. This focused approach minimizes errors and ensures consistent accuracy:

  • Each word has a unique index (1 - 2048) that corresponds to a specific dot sequence.

  • This sequence defines exactly where the dots must be punched on THE ZEED.

  • Verify the sequence: confirm that the sum of the selected powers of two equals the word’s index.

  • Hold the center punch perpendicular (90°) to THE ZEED and strike once per dot with controlled force.

  • Continue this approach for all words in your seed phrase.

STEP 3 - VERIFICATION

Once all words have been engraved, perform a full recovery simulation to confirm functional correctness. Go through each row and decode it as if you were restoring your wallet:

  • Read the dots and convert their positions back into the corresponding powers of two.

  • Calculate the resulting index number.

  • Locate the word with that index in the BIP39 wordlist.

The decoded words must match your original seed phrase exactly. If even one word differs, review that row carefully; a single misplaced or missing dot can render the entire backup unusable.

SAFETY NOTES

  • Do not take photos or create digital copies of your seed phrase.

  • Do not use a calculator for verifying sums.

  • Destroy all written calculations and the printed wordlist after completion.

  • We recommend automatic center punches from Rennsteig or Stier within the 180–250 N range

  • If you feel uncertain, do not proceed with THE ZEED until everything is clearly understood.
